Sophie is currently a third-year student at the Victorian College of the Arts, Melbourne, studying a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Design and Production) majoring in Set Design and minoring in Costume Design.
Sophie enjoys analysing and exploring the worlds of texts and transforming these worlds into visuals through colour, texture and the creative imagination. What draws her to live performance and design is the ability to transport audiences into new worlds that help inspire, educate and stimulate creative, reflective and critical thinking.
Sophie considers her practice multi-faceted and versatile with interests and experience also in scenic art and finishing, set and prop making, spatial and installation design, photography, sculpture, writing and digital illustration.
She has held various roles across the VCA’s productions with credits including Co. Leading Workshop Hand and Head Scenic Artist on the devised theatre work ‘Swim Between the Flags’, Associate Set Designer on ‘Snore’, Directed by John Kachoyan, Assistant Costume Maker on 'The Crucible', Directed by Adena Jacobs and 'Body', Choreographed by Sue Healey, Co. Leading Workshop Hand for 'Fefu and Her Friends', Directed by Sapidah Kian and is currently Set Designer for 'Pool (no water)', Directed by Sam Strong.
Sophie prides herself on her ability to form collaborative and supportive professional relationships and also strives to excel her inter-personal and leadership skills through extra circular activities including; being elected the President of The Production Society for 2019-2020, a student representative body formed to appreciate the work of students, give Production students a voice within the VCA and help foster relationships and connections between students of different faculties.
Sophie enjoys travelling and in 2017 lived and worked in the United Kingdom, where her collaborative and communicative skills excelled in a professional educational environment, working at Ardingly College. In 2019 Sophie attended the Prague Quadrennial Theatre Festival attending workshops including: The Tri-Coloured Workshop - run by Pamela Howard, Model-Making with Found Objects - run by Paul Barret and Participatory Scenography: Developing Responsive Spaces. At the beginning of 2020, Sophie participated in an intensive two week course in Traditional Balinese Mask Making at Ida Bagus Anom's Studio in Bali, Ubud.
Sophie hopes to further her design skills by completing a Master’s degree, studying abroad in Europe or the UK, and live and work overseas within the creative arts industry.
Sophie was the recipient of the Cassidy Bequest Scholarship for Production in 2019.
